As Greenland's only utility company, Nukissiorfiit is responsible for the supply of electricity and water throughout the country as well as heat in some places. Nukissiorfiit’s supply obligation covers 17 towns and 54 settlements.
Nukissiorfiit’s energy supply is largely based on renewable energy sources. It is Nukissiorfiit’s goal to use renewable energy wherever possible and that everyone has access to clean drinking water.
Nukissiorfiit is a net-revenue-controlled company owned by the Government of Greenland. Nukissiorfiit reports to the Department of Business, Mineral Resources, Energy, Justice, and Gender Equality.
Tasks at the energy- and water area were earlier managed by GTO (Greenland Technical Organization) and the municipalities. Read the story behind Nukissiorfiit here:
1950 GTO – Greenland Technical Organization was established as a department within the Prime Minister’s Office’s Greenland Department.
1958 GTO was granted the status of a state-owned enterprise.
1987 The Greenland Home Rule Government took over GTO. GTO changed its name to Nuna-Tek – Nunatsinni Teknikkikut Ingerlatsivik.
1991 Nuna-Tek received a new name: Nukissiorfiit – Greenland’s Energy Supply. The company’s task was to manage the public supply of electricity, water, and heat.
1998 Nukissiorfiit took over the electricity and water supply in the settlements from the municipalities.
2006 The additional name Greenland’s Energy Supply was removed from the company name. The company is now only called Nukissiorfiit.
