For several years, Nukissiorfiit has focused on increasing the use of renewable energy. In recent years, these efforts have intensified and broadened. Whereas the primary focus was previously on expanding hydropower, other energy sources such as solar and wind energy are now increasingly included in planning the future energy supply.
Renewable energy in the form of hydropower and heat from waste-to-energy plants accounted for nearly 70% of Nukissiorfiit’s electricity and heat sales in 2022.

Electricity from solar panels and wind turbines still constitutes only a modest share of renewable energy production. However, there is strong interest in establishing small renewable energy installations—both from private individuals and from Nukissiorfiit

What is renewable energy?

Renewable energy, or green energy, is a collective term for energy sources that are unlimited. The more we use renewable energy, the lower we are dependent on imported oil.

The list of renewable energy sources includes:

  • Hydropower
  • Solar energy
  • Wind energy
  • Geothermal energy
  • Biomass, including the biodegradable portion of waste
  • Wave and tidal energy
